Important Note
*This test is orderable in Cerner as Hepatits B Core Antibody
For the qualitative determination of total antibodies to the core antigen of the Hepatitis B virus in human serum. This assay can be used as an aid in the diagnosis of individuals with acute or chronic Hepatitis B virus infection and in the determination of the clinical status of Hepatitis B virus infected individuals, in conjunction with other Hepatitis B virus serological markers for the laboratory diagno-sis of Hepatitis B virus disease associated with Hepatitis B virus infection. This assay can also be used as an aid in the differential diag-nosis in individuals displaying signs and symptoms of hepatitis in whom etiology is unknown.
A negative test result does not exclude the possibility of exposure to hepatitis B virus. Levels of anti-HBc may be undetectable both in early infection and late after infection.Assay performance characteristics have not been established for immunocompro-mised,immunosuppressed, infants, children, or adolescent patients.
