Specimen Requirements

  • Specimen Type: Rectal and vagina
  • Container/Tube: Swab
  • Specimen Volume:  Entire specimen
  • Specimen Minimum Volume: N/A
  • Collection Instructions: Use 1 or 2 culture swabs.
  • 1. Insert swab(s) in vagina, and sample vaginal introitus.
  • 2. Insert same swab(s) approximately 1 inch beyond anal sphincter.  Gently rotate swab(s) to sample anal crypts. Feces should be evident on swab.

Normal Reference: Negative

Positives for Group B Strep automatically have susceptibilities performed if patient has penicillin allergy.
