Fetal Screen*

Important Note

This test is orderable in Cerner as Fetal Screen.

Fetal Screen testing may only be ordered on Rh negative females.  If  positive, it will reflex the Kleihauer-betke UVM test . 

For fetomaternal hemorrhage in Rh positive females, order the Kleihauer-betke UVM test.

When ordered to determine RhIG dosage on a postpartum female, an ABO/Rh must also be ordered with the Fetal Screen.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type:  Blood

Container/Tube:  Pink EDTA K2

Specimen Volume:  6 mL (Full tube)

Specimen Minimum Volume:  5 mL

Specimen Stability: 72 Hours

Collection Instructions: 

1. This test can only be collected by specially trained members of RRMC.  For more information, contact the Blood Bank at 802-747-1809.
2. Fetal screen specimen collected with the potential of RhIG administration must be banded utilizing the Blood Bank ID banding system, if the patient was not previously banded  in the past 72 hours or is not currently wearing BBID bracelet.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated.

Reference Values

Normal Reference Ranges: Negative

Critical Values: Viewing BB-SOP-11 Blood Bank Criticals and Significant Risks

If the Fetal Hemoglobin is positive a Kleihauer Betke test may be indicated. Kleihauer Betke testing is done by the laboratory at University of Vermont Medical Center.
