Fasting. Patient will be instructed to drink a glucose dosage and wait on site 2 hours to have blood drawn 3 times.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Blood
Container/Tube:

Preferred: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel)

Acceptable: Gold top, serum gel

Specimen Volume: Full tube

Specimen Minimum Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Give patient a 50 g dose of glucose beverage, noting time of ingestion (patient must drink entire beverage within 5 minutes).

2. Draw blood 1 hour after ingestion of glucose beverage.

3. Send specimen in original tube.

4. If there is a delay in transport of >1 hour, centrifuge tube.

Gluc 1 hour: 53 to 179 mg/dL

Gluc 2 hour: 53 to 152 mg/dL
