Specimen Requirements

Call Rutland Regional Medical Center Laboratory Customer Service at 802-747-1771 to obtain Copan swabs or wire shaft, polyester tipped Nasopharyngeal swabs.

Submit only 1 specimen per day from same site.

 

Specimen source is required.

 

Specimen Type: Fluid

Sources: Nasal washing/aspirate, bronch lavage

Container/Tube: Sterile container to lab within 24 hours

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions: Label container with patient’s name, identification number, date and time of collection, and type of specimen.

 

Specimen Type: Tissue or swab

Container/Tube: Sterile container or Copan swab to lab within 24 hours.

Specimen Volume: 0.5 g

Collection Instructions: Label vial with patient’s name, identification number, date and time of collection, and type of specimen.

 

Specimen Type: Nasopharyngeal swab

Container/Tube: Wire shaft, polyester tipped swab to lab within 24 hours
Specimen Volume: Entire specimen
Collection Instructions:

1. Obtain specimen using a nasopharyngeal swab.
2. Remove cap with swab attached. Holding swab between thumb and forefinger of 1 hand and sheath in other hand, give soft wire a 10° to 20° bend. This slight curve fits nose better, making procedure more comfortable for patient.
3. Slide swab along floor of nose (hand down by patient’s chin to start swab) with very light pressure to nasopharyngeal wall.
4. Rotate swab and remove along floor of nose.
5. Insert swab into Copan sleeve and reseal end with cap.

6. Label vial with patient’s name, identification number, date and time of collection, and type of specimen.
